The ZMBH accommodates a modern animal facility for the husbandry of mice as well as a large Xenopus facility. The housing of mammals is performed according to the stringent German laboratory animal law condition. A specially skilled staff provides optimal services for the individual requirements of the different research groups.

For the breeding and housing of mice and rabbits the ZMBH benefits from close collaboration with the central animal facility of the University of Heidelberg (IBF). This unit provides expertise for the husbandry of various species, including mice, rabbits and rats as well as offers services like the generation of genetically engineered mice or rats.
The Xenopus facility of the ZMBH has space for more than 500 animals, both females and males. Animals are kept under ideal conditions for production of frog oocytes and eggs and specially trained people take care of our Xenopus colony.
