Welcome to the FACS Facility at the ZMBH

The facility offers Fluorescence Activated Cell Scanning/Sorting (FACS) service to the ZMBH-DKFZ Allianz, the BZH, and members of the SFB638. The facility has a cutting edge BD FACSAriaTM flow cytometer equipped with 407 nm, 488 nm and 633 nm lasers for excitation, 9 fluorescence detectors and detectors for forward scatter and side scatter. The cytometer was funded by the Dietmar Hopp foundation award to Prof. Walter Nickel. Furthermore, an analytical BD FACScanTM machine with a 488 nm laser and detectors for forward scatter, side scatter and 3 fluorescence emission wavelengths is available for the users. The FACSAria is operated by Dr. Monika Langlotz, who is funded by the SFB638, whereas FACScan can be operated by experienced users themselves. Dr. Langlotz offers individual introductory tutorials to flow cytometry and to the use of the analytical FACScan machine.

The facility has developed into a nucleating center with respect to assays and screens based on fluorescent markers as well as gene expression systems in mammalian cells (retroviral gene transduction). Different approaches like somatic mutagenesis or integration of cDNA libraries were combined with the iterative sorting of rare cell populations. Many groups routinely use the facility for the generation of stable cell lines (including On-Off-On sort cycles to select lines optimally regulated by the tetracycline system). The facility is interested in developing further applications and welcomes new projects.

FACSAria Cell Sorter Appointments

Appointments should be normally arranged at least 3 working days in advance via e-mail to Monika Langlotz. Short-term appointments are possible on request, but cannot be guaranteed.

As we would like to ensure an efficient use of our cell sorting capacity, reservations should be preferably made for morning or early afternoon hours. When possible, please also suggest an alternative (different day and/or time). Please let me know how much time you will presumably need.

If you have to cancel, please let me know as soon as possible. Appointments must be cancelled at least 2 hours in advance

Please inform me, whether you would like to use the FACSAria machine for cell analysis or sorting, which fluorochromes you are using, and which collection device would you prefer.

For details of sample preparation please have a look at the FACSAria Info sheet.
