Expenses and Funding


Fees

All students must pay fees of 500 Euro per semester. There is no difference in fees between German, EU, and non-EU students. In addition, students must pay a standard fee of 93.60 to the services of the student board (Studentenwerk) for common facilities and a mandatory health insurance of 335 -342 Euro per semester.


Costs for housing and living

Living expenses in Heidelberg are estimated to be around 550 Euro to 750 Euro per month for a single person, depending on life style. Rent for an appartment off-campus will cost approximately 250 Euro to 400 Euro per month.
Non-EU, non-EEA nationals, please note: You have to provide proof that you are able to cover costs of at least 600 Euro per month for the duration of your stay in Heidelberg (usually 2 years) in order to receive a residence permit.

There are a limited number of rooms available from the student board (Studentenwerk). The number of packages is limited to 50 per semester. Therefore, students who wish to make use of the package should apply immediately after being notified of their acceptance into the program.
The student board also offers an "All inclusive Service Package" for international students that includes housing, public transportation and the above mentioned fee as well as various additional services (depending on the chosen package) such as meals, insurance, internet access, bicycles. Costs start at 1435 Euro for the standard package per semester.

The Office of International Relations (Akademisches Auslandsamt) will help students to find housing. In addition it offers an orientation programme and counseling with regard to:
- residence permit
- health insurance
- scholarships
- accommodation


HBIGS Fellowships

The newly founded Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling International Graduate School of Molecular and Cellular Biology Heidelberg aims to educate tomorrow‘s academic elite seeking new frontiers in science, medicine, and biotechnology. As part of this objective, the Graduate School is offering three MSc fellowships per year to outstanding students from Africa. Each fellowship amounts to € 8000 p.a. and can be granted for up to two years to candidates who have a Bachelors degree in Biosciences and who wish to obtain their Masters degree in Molecular Biosciences or Molecular Biotechnology, respectively, in Heidelberg. To apply for one of the fellowships, please, include a separate letter with your application form in which you explain your financial situation.

External sources of funding

Prospective international Students are encouraged to apply for fellowships or grants from national, international, industrial, or foundation sources for which they may be eligible. This includes the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) or European Union exchange programmes  such as Erasmus or Socrates.
Notification of external awards should be included with your application for graduate study or sent when awards are announced.
