ZMBH - Central Services - Flow Cytometry & FACS Core Facility (FFCF)

Welcome to the Facility

Flow cytometry and FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting) are fast and reliable methods for characterizing and isolating subpopulations of cells or particles in suspension based on fluorescent labeling.

The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and offers the possibility of flow cytometric cell analysis and cell sorting.

For analytical measurements a BD FACSymphony A1 and a BD FACSCanto flow cytometer with a high-throughput sampler for plate-based acquisition are available. For cell sorting the facility is equipped with a BD FACSAria III and a BD FACSMelody. The BD FACSDiscover S8 combines spectral flow cytometry and image-based cell sorting.

The FFCF is a DFG-registered service unit (RI_00566). The facility is mainly supported by the ZMBH. Financial support was also provided by FoF 1, CellNetworks, HMLS, SFB 638, SFB 1036 and GK 1188. Moreover, different research groups have contributed to the present equipment: Nickel lab, Melchior lab, Edgar lab, Knop lab, and Göpfrich lab. Dr. Monika Langlotz runs the FFCF as head of the facility together with Prof. Dr. Michael Knop as responsible PI .

Access to Instruments and Training

The facility offers introduction tutorials to flow cytometry and the use of the analytical instruments, as well as support and aid in all questions concerning flow cytometry as a method. Users, who have received the necessary training, can autonomously operate the analyzers. The facility staff operates the cell sorters and provides aid in using the analyzers.
Trained users have access to our online booking system.

To arrange an individual instrument training or to request a service appointment for cell analysis or sorting please send an e-mail to facs-core-facility@zmbh.uni-heidelberg.de
